Preparation for sea
- Ability to prepare a yacht for sea, including engine checks, selection of sails, securing and stowage of all gear on deck and below.
Deck work
- Reef, change sails, prepare to anchor/moor/get under way
Navigation
- Chartwork, visual/GPS fixes,tides, waypoints, IALA buoyage, maintaining deck-log.
Pilotage
- Execute a pilotage plan, use leading and clearing lines, transits and soundings
Meteorology
- Sources of forecast information, interpret shipping forecasts, understand use of barometer
Rule of the road
- working knowledge of Collisions Regs
Maintenance and repair work
- Able to carry out basic maintenance, change fuel filters, pump impeller, bleed diesel.
Victualling
- Understands how to victual a yacht.
Emergency situations
- Take correct action for recovery of man overboard, knows use of flares and liferaft, VHF and Mayday, helicopter rescue, secure a tow.
General organisation
- Is fully competent to take charge of a watch at sea and in harbour.
