What you need to become an Ocean Yachtmaster

To pass the interview-based RYA Yachtmaster exam you will need to be an RYA Yachtmaster Offshore with excellent organisational skills and a wealth of practical experience sailing unsupported across substantial bodies of water.


You will also need to show evidence of

600 mile Ocean Qualifying Passage

A narrative account of the planning and execution of a passage with a minimum non-stop distance of 600 miles as run by the log. You must have been skipper or mate of watch and the yacht must have been at sea continuously for at least 96 hours. The yacht must have been more than 50 miles from land or charted objects while sailing a distance of at least 200 miles.

Confidence with Celestial Navigation

Navigational records, completed on board a yacht on passages, out of sight of land showing that you are completely confident with the use of sextant and sight-reduction tables and that you navigated the yacht without the use of electronic navigational aids.

Knowledge of Worldwide meterology

The interview-style exam may also include written questions on star sight planning and reduction and worldwide meteorology.

Pre-requisites:

You should already be (or be on your way to becoming) an RYA Yachtmaster Offshore. This Preparation course and its outcomes will be valid for up to 10 years. However, it is always best to do any preparation as near as possible to the exam!)

Duration:

Live aboard for 28 days.

Dates:

• Salvador, Brazil - Trinidad: 10th Feb - 10th March 2021

• Bermuda - Azores - Dublin: 20 April - 18 May 2021:

Cost:

Voyage: £2026 GBP*/$2600 USD). Includes meals and accommodation on board.

Theory Classes: £50/$65 USD per class.

* As a British-registered non-profit organisation, all transactions are deemed to occur in the UK and The Ocean Sailing Club charges membership and product prices in UK pounds, however the club will accept payment in the local currency of where their yacht is at the time. Currently the Club uses the rate of US$1.30=£1 but this can change.
