Each Challenge leg and its Crew

Meet the...
NZ Dash Crew

NZ Dash leg: 5-19 October 2021
Distance: 1470m

More information about joining the NZ Dash

We will be crossing the Tasman Sea a bit before the usual months of November to April. The Tasman can be extremely rough if crossed in winter when the eastward moving low pressure systems are often accompanied by strong SW winds.

When approaching NZ, the route passes near the Three Kings group of rocks, which should be navigated with care. It is possible to clear in to NZ at Opua on the Bay of Islands. From Opua to Auckland is a bit over 150 miles.

Cape Horn Expedition Crew

Cape Horn Leg: 1 Nov - 12 Dec 2021
Distance 5200m

More information about the Cape Horn Expedition

According to Cornell's World Cruising Routes, "only a handful of cruising yachts take this classic route across the Southern Ocean. Most of the passage is made in to Roaring Forties". He recommends heading SE until westerlies are met. This can be as far south as 55°S in the summer months of December to February. At that latitude, the westerlies are more reliable, but not always. Icebergs were reported as far north as 54°S during the 1986 Whitbread race, but with global warming, that may not be the case any longer.

Shackleton Memorial Expedition Crew

Shackleton Memorial Expedition: 21 Dec 2021 - 31 Jan 2022
Distance 3600m

More information on Shackleton Memorial Expedition

The first part of this passage is 1100 miles. Heaing East from Ushuaia (56 °S) and arriving at Grytvyken (54°S), this entire leg will be in the Roaring Forties. Prevailing wind and swell will be from the West.

The second leg of the passage is 2500 miles north. The prevailing westerlies will give way to lighter winds of the Horse Latitudes, before encountering the South East Trades in the vicinity of the Tropic of Capricorn
